John Wick isn’t hanging up his guns just yet. Despite what looked like a final farewell in John Wick: Chapter 4, the character’s story isn’t over. Director Chad Stahelski has confirmed that Chapter 5 is officially on the way—but it won’t be business as usual.
Speaking with Empire, Stahelski made it clear that the next instalment won’t just pick up where the last left off. “The saga of John Wick was pretty wrapped up,” he said. “So the only way to do a 5 is to have a new story that involves John Wick. It’s not a continuation, with the High Table. John dealt with his grief. It will be really different, and everybody [will] see the trailer and go, ‘Holy fuck… I gotta see that.’”

Exactly how Wick returns remains under wraps. After all, Chapter 4 ended with a gravestone and more than a few unanswered questions. Still, if there’s one thing the franchise has taught us, it’s that Wick rarely stays down for long.
While Chapter 5 is still in the early stages, the larger Wick-verse is staying busy. The Ana de Armas-led spin-off Ballerina hits theaters in June, set between Chapters 3 and 4, and features a brief appearance from Wick himself. There’s also a spinoff in the works starring Donnie Yen’s blind swordsman Caine.

Beyond the live-action offerings, the franchise is heading into new territory with an animated prequel film and the TV series Under the High Table. According to Stahelski, those two projects are key to shaping what comes next. “The John Wick TV show and the animation are big priorities,” he confirmed. “Our idea is to try some things and explore some threads and use those two properties to catapult us forward into the ideas for John 5.”
So while Chapter 4 may have felt like a conclusion, it’s really more of a pivot point. Wherever John Wick goes next, it won’t be a retread. This next mission looks to be something else entirely.
