Real-life couple Alison Brie and Dave Franco are set to disturb and delight audiences with Together, an offbeat blend of body horror and romantic drama from first-time feature director Michael Shanks. The film, which premiered to strong reactions at Sundance, will open in U.S. theaters on July 30 via NEON. The current UK release date is scheduled for August 21.
Set against a deliberately mundane backdrop, Together follows longtime couple Tim and Millie, who move to the countryside hoping to reset their relationship. But isolation proves anything but peaceful. Their attempt to simplify life is quickly derailed by the arrival of an inexplicable, unnatural presence—one that threatens to unravel their bond in ways neither could have foreseen.

“This was like the most full-on thing we’ve ever done together,” said Franco in an interview with IndieWire. “We’re very picky about what we choose to do, especially when we’re onscreen together, just because we don’t want to burn people out on us.”
Franco and Brie, who also produce the film, are joined by Damon Herriman, Sunny S. Walia, Jack Kenny, and Mia Morrissey. Critics out of Sundance were taken with the film’s unexpected tone, which veers from awkward domestic comedy to full-blown horror, with it being described as a unique blend of awkward romantic dramedy and cosmic body horror.

The movie’s trailer, set to the sugary 1967 pop hit “Happy Together,” gives early warning that this isn’t your average couple’s drama. Limbs distort, intimacy mutates, and reality slowly fractures around the central pair. Brie and Franco lean into the discomfort, both physically and emotionally.
The film’s official synopsis reads: “Years into their relationship, Tim and Millie… find themselves at a crossroads as they move to the country. Abandoning all that is familiar in their lives except each other. With tensions already flaring, a nightmarish encounter with a mysterious, unnatural force threatens to corrupt their lives, their love, and their flesh.”
As for the early response? Critics describe the film as “delightfully unhinged” and “a midnight treat” packed with “giddy, gross pleasures.” A twisted metaphor for codependency or just a wild ride? Either way, Together looks anything but ordinary.
