Sequel to the explosive WWII action film ‘Sisu’ will hit theaters at the end of 2025

With a larger budget Sisu 2 promises to top the original in every way.

After the unexpected success of Sisu, director Jalmari Helander returns with Sisu 2, the sequel to his brutal World War II action thriller. Sony Pictures has confirmed that the film will hit U.S. theaters on November 21, 2025, with a UK release likely to follow shortly after.

The first film, released in 2022, is set in the remote Lapland region in 1944, toward the end of World War II. It follows an ex-soldier, Aatami (played by Jorma Tommila), who discovers gold and attempts to bring his find back to town. However, his journey is severely challenged by a ruthless SS officer and his troops.

Sisu was praised for its uncompromising violence, dark humor, and minimalist storytelling, with Tommila commanding the screen through powerful physical performance and few words. The film grossed $14 million worldwide, with $7.2 million coming from the United States. With a modest budget of $6 million, Sisu became a financial success, boosted by its popularity on streaming platforms like Netflix.

Director Jalmari Helander once again takes the helm, with lead actor Jorma Tommila also returning as the indestructible Aatami. Additionally, actors Richard Brake (Barbarian, Game of Thrones) and Stephen Lang (Avatar, Don’t Breathe) have been confirmed for major roles. The film is produced by Petri Jokiranta for Subzero Film Entertainment, in collaboration with Good Chaos and Mike Goodridge. Several international funds, including the Finnish Film Foundation and Film Estonia, are also providing financial support.

While the first film was shot entirely in Finland, production for Sisu 2 has moved to Estonia. Story details are being kept under wraps for now, but with a budget more than double that of the original, expectations are clearly higher. Helander is expected to deliver another explosive blend of stylized violence and dark humor — this time with bigger resources and a broader international audience in his sights.

Since Sisu had its first screening at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), there’s a chance that Sisu 2 will make its world premiere there as well. This could allow the film to build strong international momentum ahead of its theatrical release.

With Helander at the helm, Tommila returning as the unstoppable hero, and a larger budget backing it, Sisu 2 seems ready to take the raw energy of the original to new heights. Curious about the original film? Sisu is available to stream on Netflix and Prime Video. Check out the official trailer below.
