FX has officially locked in January 2026 as the start of production for Shōgun Season 2, the follow-up to what was arguably TV’s biggest critical and streaming hit of 2024. Stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis will return, reprising their roles as Lord Yoshii Toranaga and English sailor John Blackthorne, whose fates remain deeply entwined even a decade after the events of the first season.
The next chapter takes a bold leap forward. According to FX, the story picks up ten years later, continuing the saga of “two men from different worlds whose fates are inextricably entwined.” While that logline leaves much to the imagination, it hints that the show’s writers are ready to move beyond the pages of James Clavell’s original novel and into uncharted narrative territory.

Series creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, who guided the first season to widespread acclaim, are back at the helm. The duo just wrapped the writers’ room and are shaping this new arc from the ground up. Sanada, who also scored an Emmy for his performance, will now serve as executive producer, with Jarvis stepping up as a co-executive producer.
While additional casting is still under wraps, FX has confirmed the new season will shoot in Vancouver. If Season 1 was a careful adaptation of Clavell’s book, Season 2 will need to stand on its own as a character-driven extension of the show’s feudal Japan setting with historical inspiration still at its core.

In case anyone needed a reminder of Shōgun’s impact: the series didn’t just dominate the Emmys (taking home a record 18 awards), it also became FX’s most-watched title ever. It ran up 4.27 billion viewing minutes on Nielsen’s streaming charts during its 10-week run and held strong on Disney+ internationally.
So, where does Shōgun go after winning nearly every award in sight and wrapping up its original story? With Season 2 (and a planned Season 3), it steps into new storytelling territory no longer bound to the book. We’re sure it will still be grounded in the political tension, culture clash, and power struggles that made Season 1 so riveting.
