Paramount Pictures’ horror film Smile was a surprise hit when released in September 2022. Originally planned for a streaming release on Paramount+, the film went to theaters following hugely positive test screenings. It went on to became one of the highest-grossing horror movies of the year, earning over $217 million worldwide. Now, horror fans in the UK can watch this disturbing horror on Netflix after it dropped on the streaming service today.
In Smile, psychiatric specialist Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) has devoted her career to helping society’s most troubled individuals. However, her resolve is shaken by a case involving a young woman who insists she is being hunted by a shape-shifting entity with a terrifying grin. To Rose’s horror, the woman takes a piece of shattered crockery to her own throat, all while wearing a deranged, flesh-stretching smile.
Soon after, Rose begins to see sinister, smiling figures herself. Desperate to understand the nature of the malevolent curse now targeting her, she races against time to uncover the truth behind this parasitic presence that feeds on trauma.
The premise of this sadistically effective horror film may not be entirely original, echoing themes from movies like It Follows. But it’s filled with numerous jump scares and a palpable tension, it’s anchored by Sosie Bacon’s dedicated performance, playing an increasingly gaunt and haunted character. Coupled with a jarring, tortured score, these elements combine to deliver a chilling and disturbing encounter with the smiling face of evil.
As Smile 2 approaches, now is the ideal moment to dive into the original, newly added to Netflix’s horror collection. The sequel introduces a fresh cast, with Naomi Scott starring as Skye Riley, an international pop star haunted by the smiling demon during a major tour. The trailer vividly depicts her terrifying encounters with the ‘Smile’ demon, alongside scenes of Lukas Gage’s character in disturbing turmoil. Watch the trailer for Smile 2 here.
