Zach Cregger, the mind behind Barbarian, returns to horror this summer with Weapons, a film already stirring buzz for its unnerving premise and offbeat tone. Warner Bros. dropped the latest official trailer following a peculiar live stream, during which a child’s voice set the stage: “This is a true story that happened right here in my town. A lot of people die in a lot of really weird ways in this story. And you’re not gonna find it in the newspaper.”
And just like that, the mystery begins. Weapons kicks off when an entire class of children—minus one—vanish from their homes at the exact same time. The quiet town of Maybrook is left stunned, its residents spiraling as they confront a nightmare with no clear cause. Josh Brolin leads the charge as a desperate father, hellbent on uncovering what took his child. Julia Garner appears as the schoolteacher whose entire class is lost overnight. Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, Amy Madigan, and Austin Abrams round out the ensemble cast.

Cregger, who writes and directs, says the story walks a fine line between tones. “It’s funny, it’s scary, it’s inviting. It’s not a grim, morose slog. And yet the story it tells is really fucked up,” he told Empire Online.
While Barbarian found success as a claustrophobic thriller, Cregger describes Weapons as something far more expansive. “It’s a lot bigger and weirder than Barbarian,” he said, adding that it’s “weirder, twistier, and bigger” than his first feature. “There’s certain chapters of this that are legitimately autobiographical that I feel like I lived.” he told Entertainment Weekly.

Visually, the film is helmed by cinematographer Larkin Seiple, with production design by Tom Hammock and editing from Joe Murphy. The original score comes from Ryan Holladay, Hays Holladay, and Cregger himself. It’s a New Line Cinema and BoulderLight Pictures collaboration, slated for theatrical and IMAX release on August 8.
There’s nothing neat or tidy about Weapons. And if that trailer is anything to go by, prepare for something that’s terrifying, tender, and totally unhinged.
