‘The Mother’ Review Jennifer Lopez As Deadly Sniper Comes Out Of Hiding To Save Child

Netflix Action Thriller Sees Jennifer Lopez as an Ex-Special Forces Sniper who has to Save her Daughter after 12 Years of Hiding.

Jennifer Lopez takes off her Rom-Com hat for Netflix’s The Mother. We do not actually get to learn the ex-soldiers name, but she is one deadly woman. Lopez is really in her element when she plays a tough woman and she does plenty of ass kicking in this.

We first meet her in an FBI safe house where she is being interrogated by two FBI agents. They ask about her ex-boyfriends who are gun runners Adrian Lovell (Joseph Fiennes) and Hector Alvarez (Gael García Bernal).

She tries to convince the agents they are not safe, both insist it’s fine. But of course they are not safe, how do we know this? They are sitting directly in front of a huge window. As predicted bullets rain down on the house. Adrian enters and confronts her, he then notices she is heavily pregnant.

After she is forced to give up her baby she moves to Alaska, but she has one request. If her daughter is ever in trouble she must be told. Agent Cruise played by Omari Hardwick agrees as he owes her.

12 years later Cruise informs her, her daughter is in danger as the pair search for the 12 year old Zoe. They land in Cuba to confront her ex-boyfriend Hector Alvarez (Gael García Bernal). The protagonist takes out a bunch of his goons in some beautifully choregraphed hand to hand combat scenes she is a killing machine.

With her child now with her, she decides it’s not safe enough to return her home, she takes reluctant Zoe back with her to Alaska. Zoe questions her multiple times about who she is but ‘the mother’ remains icy cold refusing to admit it.

When in Alaska Zoe’s vulnerability is cause for concern, her mother decides to train her to protect herself. Including shooting, hunting and driving, yes a 12 year old driving a truck. Cue training montage.

With the inevitable arrival of Adrian (Joseph Fiennes) in Alaska the pair must fight him and his thugs off as they battle in the beautiful snowy woodlands.

The showdown includes some impressive snowmobile riding from ‘the mother’ and some huge explosions that look great with the snowy backdrop, in fact it all looks great in 4K.

The film has issues, on one occasion Zoe and ‘the mother’ leave a scene of smashed cars and bodies strewn on floor, with the arriving police seemingly unconcerned the pair are fleeing on a motorcycle.

Zoe can be annoyingly bratty and even after her training montage where she became an ‘expert’ shooter she still sucked and got caught and yes she crashed the truck…hey she is 12 we will let her off.

It’s still enjoyable the action is top notch, there are some great locations from South America to Alaska it all looks wonderful in Netflix’s 4K version. Jennifer Lopez is so much better as an action star, she really worked well in this role.

The Mother is streaming now on Netflix.
