‘The Exorcist‘ universe is set to expand further, guided by the creative vision of Mike Flanagan, known for his work on Doctor Sleep and The Fall of the House of Usher. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Blumhouse has made official what was already speculated: the horror maestro will be bringing his talents to the iconic franchise by writing, directing, and producing “a radical new take.”
This news follows the underwhelming box office performance of the latest film, The Exorcist: Believer, which earned $65.5 million in the U.S. and Canada and $136.2 million worldwide. NBCUniversal, Peacock, and Blumhouse had purchased the rights from Morgan Creek in July 2021 for $400 million. Due to this disappointing outcome, director David Gordon Green has decided not to return for the next installment.
Flanagan is highly respected in the horror world and known for delivering numerous hits for streaming giant Netflix, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he expressed his intentions to create something “fresh” stating:
“The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it is an honor to have the chance to try something fresh, bold and terrifying within its universe. Reuniting with my friends at Blumhouse, with whom I’ve made some of my favorite pieces of work, only makes this more exciting,”

The upcoming ‘Exorcist’ movie will be produced by Trevor Macy of Intrepid Pictures and Mike Flanagan through his new Red Room Pictures banner. John Scherer will also join the production team representing Intrepid.
Flanagan’s film will introduce an entirely new storyline, separate from 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer, directed by David Gordon Green. Initially, Green intended to direct a trilogy of ‘Exorcist’ movies, with the sequel, The Exorcist: Deceiver, which was set to be released in 2025.
With ‘The Exorcist’ now in the very capable hands of Mike Flanagan, we eagerly anticipate what he will create. Stay tuned for further updates as we keep you informed on the latest developments.
