Eddie Murphy will make his long-awaited return to his iconic character, Axel Foley, in this summer’s now officially titled Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. This comes 30 years after the not-so-iconic Beverly Hills Cop 3. After some delays, Netflix has now announced that it will be released on July 3, as indicated in their tweet below.
Axel F catches up with Detective Axel Foley, who is back on the beat in Beverly Hills. After his daughter’s life is threatened, she and Foley team up with a new partner, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and old pals Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton) to uncover a conspiracy. Kevin Bacon also joins the cast alongside Taylour Paige as Foley’s estranged daughter.
In an interview with People Murphy spoke about his return to the character, saying, “It’s a really physical movie and I had to do some physical stuff,” he said. “I like to be on the couch, I don’t like to be jumping over and shooting and running. And I had to do some jumping and shooting and running. And as a result at the end of the movie, I had a knee brace and my back is messed up. But the movie is gonna be special.”
Gordon-Levitt shared his excitement about the project, saying, “Going to work on ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ isn’t like work. You think my life is a dream. I’m riding in a helicopter next to Eddie Murphy, and we’re making each other laugh.”
The production suffered years of setbacks and script rewrites, but it’s now set for release July 3.
