The Bond franchise was rebooted in 2006 with director Martin Campbell’s Casino Royale. In an interview with The Daily Express Campbell has explained how a then 22 year old Henry Cavill was “tremendous” in his 007 audition.
Campbell directed Pierce Brosnan’s first outing in GoldenEye and due to its success, he was invited back to kickstart Daniels Craig’s Bond.
Campbell has stated that Cavill would have been Bond if Daniel Craig “didn’t exist” saying.
“He looked great in the audition. His acting was tremendous. And look, if Daniel didn’t exist Henry would have made an excellent Bond. He looked terrific, he was in great physical shape… very handsome, very chiselled. He just looked a little young at that time back then.”
When asked if Cavill could still play Bond at the age of 40, Campbell was reserved saying that actors usually sign on for a minimum of 3 films and that he could be 50 by the time he does a third one.
“Henry’s 40, so by the time he’s done the third one he’s going to be 50 and anything beyond that’s two, three years per Bond. He’s in good shape Henry, he’s a good guy. He did very well in the audition, but ironically he was too young.”
The director, denied the rumour that he favours Cavill to be the next bond, but he would be up for starting off a third reboot of the franchise.
