With the original ’90s scream queen, Neve Campbell, returning as Sidney Prescott in the upcoming Scream 7, we might potentially have another ’90s horror star making a comeback in Jennifer Love Hewitt from the 1997 hit I Know What You Did Last Summer.
The 1997 slasher film follows four friends—Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt), Helen Shivers (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Barry Cox (Ryan Phillippe), and Ray Bronson (Freddie Prinze Jr.)—who are involved in a hit-and-run accident one fateful night. After dumping the body of the man they believe they’ve killed into the sea, they vow to keep the incident a secret. A year later, they find themselves stalked by a mysterious and vengeful killer who knows their dark secret.
With the new film’s summer 2025 release date approaching, fans have been eagerly awaiting an update. Fortunately, Hewitt has recently expressed her excitement about potentially returning to the role for the first time in over twenty years. In a recent interview with ET, Hewitt expressed that she feels a mix of excitement and apprehension about reprising her role as Julie James. Despite being “terrified” about returning to the character.
“It’s in the cooker, let me just say that. I’ve done a couple preliminary phone calls…
Honestly, it’s just wild to even think about. Truly, if it comes together, I think I don’t even know how I’m going to feel, except extremely overwhelmed and grateful. Honestly terrified because it’s 26 years later.
There’s power in being older. There’s power in having gone off and had three kids. There’s a sense of ‘I can do anything now.’ The vulnerability that was Julie James in one and two definitely doesn’t exist in this one, I don’t think. I’m excited to just show her grown up.”

I Know What You Did Last Summer 4 is still in the early stages of development, even though it has a set release date. However, Jennifer Love Hewitt’s enthusiasm for a potential return and indications that her former co-star Freddie Prinze Jr. might also come back make the revival look promising, and they will be looking to capture the same success as the Scream franchise.
I Know What You Did Last Summer 4 is set to hit theaters summer 2025. We will keep you updated on any further developments.
