20th Century Studios has released the first trailer for the latest installment in their ‘Planet of the Apes’ series. Titled Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, the new film ushers in a new era set several generations after the reign of Caesar.
In this new world, apes have emerged as the dominant species under the rule of a tyrannical king, while humans are relegated to scavenging what little remains, all the while being hunted by their ape overlords.
The Apes movies were first brought to the screen in 1968 with the Charlton Heston-led Planet of the Apes, which was loosely based on a 1963 novel written by Pierre Boulle.
The success of the original film led to the creation of a franchise that includes multiple sequels, television series, and reboots. The films explore themes of social and political commentary, as well as the consequences of scientific experimentation and societal evolution.
The official synopsis for the film reads as follows: Many years after the reign of Caesar, a young ape goes on a journey that will lead him to question everything he’s been taught about the past and make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.
Kingdom is directed by Wes Ball and stars Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, and William H. Macy.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will be in cinemas May 10.
