The debut trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux has arrived! Marking the much anticipated return of Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck/Joker, alongside the introduction of Lady Gaga’s portrayal of Harley Quinn. As anticipation builds for Todd Phillips‘ Joker sequel, the burning question on everyone’s mind is whether or not it will be a musical…And the answer? Well, it remains elusive as the trailer doesn’t offer clarity one way or the other.
The trailer indeed suggests a much deeper musical element when compared to the first movie. However, Phillips himself clarified at Tuesday’s CinemaCon event that he doesn’t categorize it as a musical per se, but rather emphasizes that music plays a pivotal role in the film. He did however, assure fans that it will “make sense” when they watch the film.
The trailer for the new film finds Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck right where we left him in Arkham Asylum, and it’s there he meets Gaga’s Harley Quinn. And it may not be how you would expect as it looks as though there’s a big shift in Harley Quinn’s origin; it appears to show her as a patient in Arkham Asylum rather than as psychiatrist Dr. Harleen Quinzel.
Warner Bros. and DC have largely kept the plot under wraps, but the poster released last week and the new teaser trailer focus on Arthur and Harley in a romantic setting. The pair are depicted intertwined in various dance scenes. However, the title alone provides a significant clue: ‘Folie à Deux’ refers to “an identical or similar mental disorder affecting two or more individuals,” hinting at shared romantic delusions.
In 2019, Joker was a massive success, acclaimed by both audiences and critics. It earned over $1 billion at the box office, making it the most profitable R-rated movie of all time. Joaquin Phoenix’s outstanding performance in the film also earned him an Oscar.
Joker: Folie à Deux will hit cinemas worldwide on October 4, 2024, on the fifth anniversary of the original film’s release.
