Amazon Prime Video have released its first trailer for their reimagining of 2005’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Donald Glover and Maya Erskine star as John and Jane Smith in the remake set to premiere on February 2 exclusively on Prime Video.
The 2005 original starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, the action-comedy film directed by Doug Liman followed the seemingly ordinary suburban couple, John and Jane Smith, who discover that they are both highly skilled assassins working for different organizations. Unaware of each other’s secret lives, their marriage becomes strained.
In this rendition of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, rather than a married couple discovering each other’s real job the two individuals are recruited by a enigmatic spy organization that promises them a glamorous life, if they however assume new identities and enter into an arranged marriage as Mr. and Mrs. John and Jane Smith.
The teaser showcases the relationship developing in between shots of gunfights, explosions and chase scenes. As well as starring, Donald Glover is co-creator and executive producer, the series also has a packed cast including Alexander Skarsgård, Eiza González, Sarah Paulson, Sharon Horgan, Ron Perlman, Billy Campbell, Paul Dano, John Turturro, Parker Posey and Wagner Moura.
The official synopsis for the show reads, “Two lonely strangers land jobs working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travel, and a dream brownstone in Manhattan. The catch? New identities in an arranged marriage as Mr. and Mrs. John and Jane Smith. Now hitched, John and Jane navigate a high-risk mission every week while also facing a new relationship milestone. Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they catch real feelings for each other. What’s riskier: espionage or marriage?”
All eight episodes of the season are scheduled to premiere February 2 on Prime Video.
