Apple TV have released the trailer for the highly anticipated WWII drama Masters of the Air, it marks the third World War II miniseries from executive producers Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, after Band of Brothers & The Pacific. It features a star studded cast that includes Academy Award-nominees Austin Butler and Barry Keoghan.
Masters of the Air tells the story of the men from The 100th Bomb Group, they were a prominent unit of the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. Activated in 1942, the group played a crucial role in the strategic bombing campaign against Nazi Germany. Operating primarily from Thorpe Abbotts airfield in England, the 100th Bomb Group flew B-17 Flying Fortress bombers and participated in numerous daylight bombing missions over Europe.
The group gained a reputation for its tenacity and bravery in the face of intense enemy opposition, earning the nickname ‘The Bloody Hundredth’ due to the high casualties it suffered. Despite the challenges, the 100th Bomb Group contributed significantly to the Allied air effort, ultimately helping to weaken the German war machine and pave the way for the success of the D-Day invasion and the overall Allied victory in Europe.
The series explores the mental and emotional challenges these young men endured whilst playing a crucial role in dismantling Hitler’s Third Reich. Some were shot down and captured, with many wounded or losing their lives.
The series is based on the book Masters of the Air by Donald L. Miller and is written by John Orloff, alongside Butler & Keoghan the cast also includes, Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle, Nate Mann, Rafferty Law, Josiah Cross, Branden Cook and Ncuti Gatwa.
The series will debut on Apple TV with a two-part premiere January 26, 2024, one new episode will follow every Friday until March 15, 2024.
