Jennifer Lawrence may have taken a break for a few years but her return has been solid with Don’t Look Up and a great showing of her acting chops in Causeway. Next she moves into a new territory with raunchy comedy No Hard Feelings.
The trailer alone provided some hard laughs (the throat punch had me) this looks like a new direction for her after a touch of comedy in satire Don’t Look Up, this is a straight up raunchy comedy in which she looks totally comfortable and natural.
Lawrence, 32, stars as Maddie an Uber driver who has her car impounded, she responds to an advert ‘Need a car? from two parents who want someone to date their introverted and awkward son Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman) to bring him out of his shell before he leaves for college.
Plenty of physical comedy ensues as reluctant Percy is harder than she realises to seduce including a pepper spraying and a drunk Percy with the above mentioned accidental throat punch.
The trailer hasn’t been without criticism with some viewers complaining about the age gap between the two characters. Some are uncomfortable with Maddie obviously much older and with a wealth of life experience seducing an awkward 19 year old.
With the backlash there is also a huge amount of positivity with many encouraging comments from viewers that are happy to see a throwback comedy that could have easily existed in the 80’s or 90’s.
No Hard Feelings releases in theaters 23rd June 2023.
