With the recent news production of The Last of Us season two being paused due to the writers strike. HBO executive Francesca Orsi has more disappointing news on season two.
The post apocalyptic series is based on the hugely popular video game. The majority of the story is set 20 years after the Cordyceps fungus adapts to infect humans, leaving cities and populations destroyed. Joel is a smuggler who is tasked with moving a 14 year old girl Ellie across the country to doctors who hope to harvest an antidote from her, she is the only known person who is immune.

In an interview with Deadline, Francesca Orsi was asked about a number of HBO shows and how they were being effected by the writers strike. Including The Last of Us, Orsi gave the updates below.
“While everything at this moment is pencils down, I’m hopeful that we can come to terms sooner than later. Otherwise we will have to assess what is the end of the 24 schedule, what are the shows that are going to be delivered for 2025.” At this point, those shows that I’m looking to air wouldn’t necessarily be ready if this strike last six to nine months. So yes, that’s a big question for us, but I think we’ll cross that road once we come to it.”
Francesca Orsi continued saying, “We were looking at The Last Of Us for some time in 2025.”

The unspecified delay to season two is going to be extremely disappointing to fans, with anticipation high due to the success of season one. The Last of Us is universally loved by fans and critics. With 30.4 million viewers across the season it makes it HBO’s biggest audience since Game of Thrones final season in 2019.
Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin have repeatedly said they will not rush season two, originally set for a 2024 release, the delay will at least give them more time to perfect the next instalment, they have set a high bar.
