We will soon be revisiting the eerie town of Derry in HBO’s Welcome to Derry, an upcoming series set in the IT universe. This series will delve into Pennywise’s origins while also unveiling us to new horrors. With director Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour promising a character-driven exploration of Pennywise the Clown and his backstory.
Welcome to Derry comes after the box office success of Andrés Muschietti’s IT and IT: Chapter 2 and Muschietti alongside his sister Barbara Muschietti and screenwriter Jason Fuchs, has teamed up to craft the horror prequel.
In an interview with Screen Rant, Osei-Kuffour teases that the series will maintain the horror from Muschietti’s movies while taking the opportunity to build a much longer, more character-driven story, stating.
It’s very, very character-driven. I’ve enjoyed preparing for that show, and I think audiences will be as scared as they are in the original movies, and Andy Muschietti’s handprints are all over this series. So, I think people will be very excited for the series.

Pennywise, originating from Stephen King’s novel IT, has solidified its place as one of King’s most iconic characters. Since its debut in the late 80s, Pennywise has continued to captivate audiences across generations.
The character first came to life in a TV mini-series in 1990, starring Tim Curry. Since then, the novel has attracted new fans, especially following the massive success of Andy Muschietti’s film adaptations in 2017 and 2019, which collectively grossed over $1 billion worldwide.
As it stands, information on the release date is limited; originally planned for Halloween 2024, it has been pushed back to 2025. *And in an interview, Bill Skarsgård, who played Pennywise in the latest films, confirmed that he will not be reprising the role.
Those in the cast previously announced are, Jovan Adepo, Taylour Page, James Remar, Stephen Rider, Chris Chalk and Madeline Stowe.
We will keep you up to date with any developments for Welcome to Derry.
