HBO has released the trailer for their latest mini-series, The Regime a satirical political dark comedy. It stars Kate Winslet as a political leader with an unconventional leadership style, struggling to hold on to power.
The trailer reveals the bizarre relationship between Winslet’s character and Matthias Schoenaerts as he assumes the role of her right-hand man. Set within the confines of a European regime’s palace, the story unfolds over the course of a tumultuous year, chronicling the power-hungry Chancellor’s struggle as things begin to unravel.
The official synopsis for the series reads as follows: “The darkly comedic six-episode series tells the story of life within the walls of a modern authoritarian regime as it begins to unravel. After not leaving the palace for quite some time, Chancellor Elena Vernham (Winslet) has grown increasingly paranoid and unstable when she turns to a volatile soldier, Herbert Zubak (Schoenaerts), as an unlikely confidant. As Zubak’s influence over the chancellor continues to grow, Elena’s attempts to expand her power eventually result in both the palace and the country fracturing around her.”
The six-episode limited series is crafted by Succession duo, Will Tracy and Frank Rich. And directed by Stephen Frears.
Alongside Winslet and Schoenaerts the cast also includes Guillaume Gallienne, Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton and Hugh Grant.
The Regime will premiere on Sunday, March 3 at 9 pm on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max. It will air on SKY in the UK but there is no release date as of yet.
