Amazon Confirms ‘Tomb Raider’ Series Featuring Phoebe Waller-Bridge as Writer and Executive Producer

Phoebe Waller-Bridge takes on the iconic franchise!

Amazon’s stride towards the small screen adaptation of Tomb Raider gains momentum as they confirm a series order for an action-packed series. Over a year ago, the Emmy-winning Phoebe Waller-Bridge embarked on the venture of writing and producing this adaptation of the beloved video game, now evolving into a thrilling live-action series.

Based of the hugely popular Tomb Raider video game series, the show will no doubt delve into the escapades of the renowned archaeologist and daredevil, Lara Croft. Amazon, partnering with Crystal Dynamics, has announced that the series will debut solely on Prime Video across over 240 countries and territories globally.

A global casting hunt is set to kick off imminently to find the perfect actress to play Lara Croft in the forthcoming series. While details on the release date and any actors potentially joining the series remains undisclosed at this stage.

Certainly, Tomb Raider and its iconic protagonist Lara Croft have seen numerous adaptations, with Angelina Jolie’s portrayal being the most notable. Jolie assumed the role of Croft in two films during the early 2000s. The first movie achieved a global box office gross of over $274 million, while the sequel garnered around $157 million worldwide. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, Jolie’s star appeal and the enduring popularity of the video game series ensured the commercial success of both films.

In 2018, Tomb Raider received a reboot with Alicia Vikander taking on the role of the adventurous archaeologist. This adaptation closely mirrored the world established in the latest video games. The story revolves around Lara Croft’s quest to unravel the mystery surrounding her father’s disappearance. Refusing to believe he’s gone, Lara ventures to a remote island near Japan, determined to uncover the truth. It also was relatively successful grossing over $275 million worldwide, solidifying Tomb Raider’s commercial power.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge is no newcomer to action, having written James Bond film No Time to Die and appearing in last summer’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. And she couldn’t contain her excitement about tackling the iconic franchise Tomb Raider.

“If I could tell my teenage self this was happening I think she’d explode,” Phoebe Waller-Bridge said. “Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure. Bats ‘n all.”

Speaking to IGN last year, Waller-Bridge said she wanted to develop something “dangerous and exciting” for the Tomb Raider series, saying. “There’s room to do something really quite dangerous, and if I can do something dangerous and exciting with Tomb Raider, I already have an audience of people who love Lara and hopefully will continue to. And that is a very unusual position to be in. It’s the old Trojan horse.”

Fans also have even more reason to be excited, In a recent announcement, Crystal Dynamics and Amazon Games unveiled their joint venture to create and release a fresh, multiplatform Tomb Raider video game. Described as a “single-player, narrative-driven action-adventure,” this upcoming installment promises to usher players into a new era of Lara Croft’s iconic exploits within the franchise.
